Day boat or liveaboard?

Two ways to get certified in Cairns. We run day-trip courses, so we’re not neutral — but both are good options for different people, and you’ll have a better holiday if you pick the right one.

Choose a liveaboard if

A liveaboard course suits you if…

· You have plenty of time in Cairns and diving is the main reason you came

· You want maximum dives — more nights means more dives, including night dives

· You’re travelling alone or with other divers, so nobody’s waiting for you

· You’re already comfortable in the water and open ocean doesn’t faze you

· You want the immersion — several days of nothing but diving

If that’s you, a liveaboard is a great way to learn. Genuinely.

Choose a day trip if

A day-trip course suits you if…

· You’ve got limited days and want to see the Daintree, Kuranda and the city too

· You’re travelling with people who don’t dive — they get a full day on the reef

· You’d rather sleep in a proper bed than a shared cabin on a moving boat

· You’re nervous about the water and want to start somewhere you can stand up

· You get seasick. Bigger factor than people expect — several days offshore is a long time to feel unwell

· You want to try it before committing to a multi-day course

Both give you the same certification

An SSI Open Water Diver card from a day-trip course is exactly the same card, recognised in the same places, as one from a liveaboard.

On budget: compare the total, not the course price — a liveaboard bundles your nights aboard, a day-trip course leaves you paying for your room but free to choose it. Work out the total for your dates before you decide.

More dives, deeper immersion, and you have the time? Liveaboard.

Limited days, travelling with non-divers, nervous in the water, or prone to seasickness? Day trip.
