The Outer Reef, at Your Own Pace

For certified divers, Moore Reef offers a range of dive sites on the outer Great Barrier Reef, reached from a permanently moored pontoon rather than a rolling deck. You prepare on a stable platform, enter with full support, and explore for up to 50 minutes to a maximum depth of 18 metres — with regular encounters like Giant Clams, a Humphead Maori Wrasse, and green sea turtles.

Haven't dived in a while? Moore Reef is an ideal, supported re-entry to scuba. Many guests are uncertain whether they'll remember what to do — but once underwater, it comes back quickly, with our dive team close by throughout.

This is the most important step before booking any dive. Some medical conditions and regular medications can prevent you from diving on the day — and our dive team can't make exceptions at the reef. Reviewing the medical checklist only takes a minute. If a condition applies to you, you'll need a "fit to dive" certificate from a doctor, and guests 65 and over always require medical clearance. Checking now means no disappointment on the day.

Yes. Certified divers can explore a range of dive sites at the Moore Reef pontoon for up to 50 minutes, reaching a maximum depth of 18 metres. All equipment is included — you just need to bring your internationally recognised certification on the day.
Do I need to bring my certification card?
Yes. Please bring your current, internationally recognised dive certification on the day of your dive so our team can confirm your qualification.
How long and how deep is the dive?
Certified dives run for up to 50 minutes to a maximum depth of 18 metres, guided by our qualified dive staff.
How many dives can I do in a day?
Up to two guided dives per day at the Moore Reef pontoon, subject to conditions. All dives are guided by qualified dive staff.
I haven't dived in years — is that OK?
Absolutely. Moore Reef is a supported, gentle re-entry to scuba. You prepare on the stable pontoon with the dive team close by, and most guests find it comes back to them quickly once underwater.
Is equipment included?
Yes. All dive equipment is included in the dive price. You only need to bring your certification and swimwear.
Is there a medical check?
Yes. All divers must review the medical checklist before booking. Guests with an existing medical condition or who take regular medication should seek medical advice and bring a "fit to dive" certificate. Guests aged 65 and over need medical clearance from a doctor.
Where does the dive take place?
At the Moore Reef pontoon on the outer Great Barrier Reef. The tour departs from Reef Fleet Terminal, 1 Spence Street, Cairns, with check-in between 8:45 and 9:45am.
