Fitzroy Island with kids
Why We Love Fitzroy
Fitzroy Island is perfect when you want something slower. We leave the snorkel gear to the kids and spend our time paddling, exploring, and relaxing under the trees. It feels more like a beach holiday than a reef trip.
What I Packed
- Same essentials as the other tours
- Big tote for snorkel gear (trust me on this one)
- Reef shoes for coral beach
- No pram this time — it’s not practical for the island
The Day in Short
- 8:45am – Check-in
- 10:15am – Depart Cairns
- 11:00am – Arrive on island
- 3:30pm – Depart
- 4:30pm – Return
What to Expect as a Parent
You might have to collect snorkel gear from another boat, so have a bag to carry it.
Set up on the beach, have a snack, take a swim. We usually do the glass-bottom boat in the morning and a short walk to Nudey Beach in the arvo. If the kids aren’t up for walking, we just hang at Welcome Bay.
Coral Beaches = Bring Shoes!
The kids spend ages looking at coral pieces and talking about sea creatures. It’s a beautiful way to slow down.
A bucket helps if they like collecting (just no taking things home!).
Final Thought
The Great Barrier Reef with kids isn’t just doable — it’s a core memory in the making. Don’t aim for perfection. Pack well, go with the flow, and soak it all in.
PS: The Reef & Island combo? Still my top pick.
