Reef & Island in a Day – The Best Combo for Curious Kids

by | Jul 31, 2025 | Uncategorized

Moore Reef is part of the living Great Barrier Reef — a place where coral gardens stretch to the horizon and marine life moves at its own pace. Our pontoon is your platform to step quietly into this world. Snorkel, dive, or simply watch from above the water — the reef is the real show.

Just 90 minutes from Cairns, our pontoon is your platform to explore living coral gardens, calm lagoons, and marine life that makes the reef unforgettable.

If you’re torn between visiting the reef or the island — why not both? The Reef and Island tour is a family favourite in our house (and my personal top pick). You get reef time in the morning and a chilled island arvo to wind down. It’s the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation, especially with kids in tow.

🐠 What Makes This Combo Great?

You start the day at Moore Reef, snorkelling, sliding down the pontoon waterslide, and spotting Nemo and friends. There’s an underwater observatory and a glass-bottom boat ride too — great for little ones who aren’t ready to snorkel yet.

Then you sail to Fitzroy Island for the afternoon. Lunch is served as soon as you arrive, and there’s time to explore the beach, visit the general store, or take a stroll to Nudey Beach. It’s one big tropical adventure without feeling too rushed.

🎒 What to Pack

Bring everything you would for a standard reef trip, plus:

  • Walking shoes (especially if you’re heading to Nudey Beach)

  • An extra towel for beach lazing

  • Snacks to tide the kids over until lunch

  • Reef shoes if you plan on rock-hopping

Leave the pram behind if you’re planning to explore the island trails — they’re not exactly stroller-friendly.

👣 What the Day Feels Like

The Reef and Island tour is full-on but never overwhelming. The morning is action-packed, but by the time you hit Fitzroy Island, the pace slows. It’s all about balance: excitement for the kids, a bit of downtime for the adults, and plenty of fresh air and sunshine.

Most kids end up napping on the boat ride home — and honestly, that might be the real magic of the day.
