What Are Master Reef Guides? Meet Sunlover Reef Cruises’ Master Reef Guides
At Sunlover Reef Cruises, we want every Great Barrier Reef experience to feel inspiring, memorable and informative. That is why we are proud to have Master Reef Guides within our team.
Master Reef Guides help guests understand the reef in a deeper way. They share current reef knowledge, explain why the reef matters and help visitors connect with this remarkable World Heritage Area.
What is a Master Reef Guide?
A Master Reef Guide is a trained reef interpreter and ambassador. These guides help bring the Great Barrier Reef to life through facts, stories and real-world insight.
The program was created by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators and Tourism and Events Queensland. Together, these organisations support high-quality reef interpretation across the region.
Master Reef Guides do more than point out fish and coral. Instead, they explain reef science, reef management and reef conservation in ways that people can understand and remember.
How do you become a Master Reef Guide?
You cannot simply sign up and become a Master Reef Guide overnight. First, candidates need strong reef knowledge and industry experience. Then they must complete training, fieldwork and assessment.
They also need to show they can communicate clearly and confidently with guests. In addition, they must keep learning as reef science and conditions change.
You can learn more about the training process on the official Become a Master Reef Guide page.
Why Master Reef Guides matter
Master Reef Guides help turn a great day out into a more meaningful experience. Guests do not just see the reef. They also learn how it works, why it is special and what helps protect it.
For example, a Master Reef Guide can explain coral life, marine animals, reef health and the links between people and sea country. As a result, guests leave with more than photos. They leave with a stronger connection to the Great Barrier Reef.
This focus on education fits naturally with Sunlover’s education experiences and our commitment to sharing the reef in a thoughtful and engaging way.

How this supports the Sunlover experience
At Sunlover Reef Cruises, we want guests to enjoy the reef and understand it. That approach shapes the way we share information across our experiences.
Whether guests visit Moore Reef, explore Fitzroy Island or combine both on our Reef & Island experience, we aim to create a stronger connection to the reef.
Just as importantly, we want visitors to see the Great Barrier Reef as more than a holiday backdrop. We want them to see it as a living ecosystem that deserves care, respect and protection.
Proudly part of the Sunlover story
We are incredibly proud of Abbi Robinson, Michelle Barry and Pablo Cogollos. Their involvement in the Master Reef Guide program reflects the care, knowledge and passion we value at Sunlover Reef Cruises.
Because of that, their work strengthens the guest experience and supports our wider commitment to reef education.
