First-Time Diving on the Great Barrier Reef
with Sunlover Reef Cruises
Every day at Moore Reef, our dive team introduces guests to the underwater world — and first-time diving on the Great Barrier Reef is an experience like no other. Breathing underwater while surrounded by fish, coral and colour is like stepping into a living aquarium.
When the I Love Cairns family brought visiting friends out to the reef, they chose Sunlover Reef Cruises — and the introductory diving at Moore Reef became the highlight of their holiday. The group included two first-time divers — Ally and her brother Jonathan — along with their parents Tim and Amanda, certified divers returning to the water after many years away.

Watch: The intro dive experience
Before the Dive — What to Expect
Introductory divers with Sunlover complete a full briefing with the dive team during the journey out to the reef. On this day, Dive Instructor Diego walked the group through their equipment, key safety steps, and what to expect underwater — calm, thorough, and designed to make first-timers feel confident before they ever touch the water.
Tim hadn't dived in 26 years, originally certified in Townsville with open water dives at Magnetic Island. "I really wanted to be there when my kids tried scuba for the first time." Amanda learned to dive in the 1980s alongside her father and sister. "Scuba allows you to really explore the reef. It makes you feel a part of the underwater world."
Jonathan — first-time diver
"I'm not nervous, but I am excited. My dad said scuba diving was like flying underwater — I can't wait to see what that is like."
Why Moore Reef Works — The Pontoon Advantage
Sunlover's introductory scuba dives take place at the Moore Reef pontoon on the outer Great Barrier Reef. Instead of entering directly from a vessel into open water, guests prepare at the pontoon, enter with full instructor support, and move at their own pace — a critical difference for first-timers.
The pontoon also means the whole family can enjoy the reef together. While some dive, others can snorkel, join a semi-submersible tour, visit the underwater observatory, or relax on the platform. As a EcoTourism Australia Hall of Fame operator and GBRMPA-designated site steward, Sunlover has been running this experience since 1991.

Into the Water — The Dive
Ally and Amanda were paired with Dive Instructor Aden, while Tim and Jonathan went with Diego. Once ready, they descended beneath the surface and began exploring the reef. Highlights included a Titan Triggerfish, Giant Clams, a Humphead Maori Wrasse — and a Green Sea Turtle.
Ally — first-time diver
"Scuba was much easier than I expected. It was so great to get close to the fish and corals — I tried helmet diving before and found it uncomfortable. This was completely different."
Rediscovering Diving — After 26 Years Away
For certified divers returning after years away, Moore Reef offers a supported, gentle re-entry to scuba. Amanda had been a little uncertain whether she'd remember what to do — but once underwater, it all came back instantly. One of the standout moments was a turtle sighting in its natural habitat — the kind of encounter guests experience regularly thanks to Moore Reef's outer reef location and remarkable marine life diversity.
Amanda — certified diver, returning
"I saw so much more than I ever thought I would." Now I've done scuba again, I really want to get back into it. Even as a certified diver who hasn't dived in a long time — it was awesome.

Tim — certified diver, 26 years between dives
"This was the best spot I have ever been." I've never seen so many different types and colours of corals. Diego and Aden were excellent — we felt very supported and safe.
"I've done scuba again — and now I really want to get back into it on a regular basis."

The day at Moore Reef was one of the standout moments of this family's time in Cairns. Ally and Jonathan left so inspired they want to enrol in a full dive course to become certified divers.
